PHUSTUS, Thailand (AFP) —A Thai man was sentenced today to six months in prison for his role in a scheme to illegally import and use counterfeit and expired versions of Viagra.
The man, who was identified in court as an employee of a Thai pharmaceutical company, was found guilty in 2012 of his crime by a jury. The case will be tried in December in a trial in the Pattaya District Court, a trial that began on April 5. The jury convicted the man's brother, who was a pharmacist, and his father, who was a pharmacist, in 2014.
"The defendant is a man who has used a fake version of Viagra to solve the problem of counterfeit drugs in Thailand," a judge told him.
The case is being prosecuted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. The United Nations has a "black box" warning for counterfeit drugs and fake Viagra, but not yet on its own. A "black box" warning is "to ensure that counterfeit drugs are not being sold to the public and to institute an increased number of laws and regulations to protect the health, safety and well-being of citizens and the general public," the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime told AFP.
The jury also heard that the men were also involved in other illegal operations, including importing and selling fake Viagra, the U. N. said. The drugs were smuggled into the country from China, and were never recovered, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said.
